Acquired
by the council at the turn of the century Hillsborough Park is a 20
hectare conservation area in the heart of Hillsborough. The park is
the home to Hillsborough
Library which resides in the grade 2 listed Hillsborough Hall
(former home of the Dixon family). The park hosts a variety of sporting
amenities including a first class crown green bowling club, four floodlit
tennis courts, a fishing pond and ample space for ball games. The
park also has a childrens play area and for the adults a "Walled
Garden" which is a testament to the hard work of local volunteers.
The park is a key centre for local events such as the annual MayFest
which attracts thousands of visitors. There are also regular fun fairs
and in past years other one off events such as concerts or gykhanas
have been held. Overlooked by Sheffield Wednesday Football Club the
park also attracts football training for youngsters. For some more
images why not check out Friends
of Hillsborough Park. Hillsborough park also hosts the world famous
Hallamshire
Harriers running club. The Harriers live right next door to the
Hillsborough
Arena Sports Association which is the home of Sheffield Hillsborough
Hawks Amateur Rugby League Football Club and Hillsborough Pumas Junior
Football Club. The Association has floodlit five a side pitches for
hire and offers a variety of other activites, for a full list check
out the link.
If
the thought of all this activity has worn you out then don't be put
off visiting the park. The park is well used by locals and visitors
for just walking and relaxing.

Awarded
the Fitness Industry Association UK Centre of the Year award in 2005
Hillsborough
Lesure Centre has a leisure pool, a training pool, sports halls
and a gymnasium. The pool has a wave machine and water slides and is
great fun for the kids but a bit of a compromise for serious swimming.
Prices for activities are quite high but a membership scheme is available
by direct debit, this can give unlimited access to facilities. The centre
was initially built for the World Student Games in 1991 but has recently
undergone a refit making it more accessible to wheelchair users.

Despite
some recent problems with local landlords mothballing key units there
are still some great shops in Hillsborough. Some local butchers provide
locally sourced meat and make wonderful pies and sausages. There is
also a real fish monger and three fruit and veg shops. There is a Co-op
which has a medium size food hall and a variety of electrical goods
and housewares. The Co-op also hosts a clothes store and one of Hillsboroughs
three travel agents. With Hillsborough also being a popular place to
live there are countless Estate Agents and a couple of local Solicitors'
offices. For details of some of the local shops check out the Links
page.

There
are two medical centres in Hillsborough : "Tramways"
on Holme Lane and "Dykes Hall Medical Centre" on Dykes Hall
Road. There are also a number of private dental practices at least one
of which offers acupuncture. For the more homeopathically minded Hillsborough
Arcade also boasts a Chinese Doctor and Middlewood Road a Heath Food store. |
